Oxfordshire Boy’s U19 Intercounties Stage 2 Promotion group

On the 22nd January 2012 the U19 county team travelled to Wycliffe school for a chance to qualify for the National County Finals. Unfortunately Alex Noakes had been stuck down by injury the night before and was out and Joe Brooke had a heavy cold but the troops carried on regardless!

First up was South East Wales, a strong team packed with Welsh junior internationals. They have very passionate players and supporters. It was always going to be close and it went to the deciding rubber, Tom Wellstead against the ultra fit, Robert Lieke. The pace was high, with each rally well contested and by the end of the second game Tom was starting to blow! Luckily Tom had a plan B and started to change the pace of the game, mixing lobs and drops with his hard drives. It paid off and Tom was very satisfied to win the tie for Oxfordshire.

Next up was Somerset, a team we had not played for a number of years. The Oxfordshire boys put in a clinical professional performance to comfortably win the tie, 5-0. Kian Guerzoni played particularly well after a nervous first match.

Our last match was always going to be our greatest challenge, the favourites Gloucestershire. Unfortunately by now Joe Brooke was even more under the weather and had to retire during his match against the highly ranked, Tom Ford. However Chris Backhouse struck back putting in an excellent attacking display to see off James Watkins, 3-1. This finished off an impressive unbeaten day for Chris. With Kian now playing his best squash on the other court, leading the accomplished Matt Boal two games to one, it was starting to look like an upset was on the cards. However sensing the danger the Glocs supporters came out in force and helped Matt to raise his game and just beat a determined Kian in the fifth.  Tom Wellstead put in a brave effort against the highly ranked Scott Young before going down in four.  Jack Roddan, who was playing and moving very well, was unfortunate to go down in three very close games at fourth string.

A great effort from the boys, who finished the day exhausted! This meant we finished 2nd in our group with an outside chance of reaching the National finals as the strongest runners-up.
