On Sunday 10th October at Abingdon Squash Club the Oxfordshire U15 boy’s team played there first round of inter-county matches.
The team consisted of;
1. Ben Hedger 2. Jonathan Betts 3. Freddie Borg 4. Sam Boughton 5. Nick Angus
This was an entirely new team from last year and it also faced a very tough group in West of Wales, Gloucestershire and Worcestershire.
All the boys had some excellent games. Highlights included two excellent wins for Sam Boughton including a superb win over his Gloucestershire opponent. Sam showed he has being working hard on his game with excellent control and focus and fantastic movement. Nick Angus in his first ever county matches performed very well. He showed a great attitude and keenness to learn despite coming up against three very strong, experienced players. Ben Hedger, still only 12 years old, played excellently at Number 1 string against some of the countries best U15s. He managed to win his game against Worcestershire in a thrilling 3-2 match and produced some breathtaking rallies against a very strong West of Wales opponent, nearly twice his size! After a slow start, Freddie Borg had an epic and very exciting match against his Worcestershire opponent. It had everything, full of great rallies and drama. He eventually went down 11-9 in the fifth. Jonathan Betts also had a fantastic match against his very experienced and clever Worcestershire opponent, Jack Dukes. He played his best squash to take the first game but then Jack changed his tactics and managed to turn the match around in his favour. Both boys came off thoroughly exhausted!
Overall the boys had a great day of squash and despite finishing bottom of the very strong group they showed great spirit and sportsmanship throughout.
