Lincolnshire - April 2013
Congratulations to the Oxfordshire BU13 team, who beat Cheshire (3-2), Lincolnshire (3-2) and lost to Sussex (4-1) to come runners up in the 2012/2013 Intercounties Trophy Final.
The team got off to a great start, with Rhys, Nicholas and Nikhil winning their 3rd, 4th and 5th string matches 3-0 against Cheshire to put us 3-0 up in the first tie. Marcus got a game point against England's number 2 player, but Cheshire's number 1 proved too strong and a similar story unfolded for Ben at string 2, but we won the tie 3-2.
Nicholas and Nikhil again did the business 3-0 against Lincolnshire, but Rhys found the going harder at number 3, so the tie was finely balanced at 2-1 with 2 to play. Marcus stepped up to beat last months England number 7, 3-0 to take the pressure off Ben, who won a game at number 2, so again we won the tie 3-2.
The final tie was against champions Sussex. We knew we needed to win 4 games to be assured of second place, and Nicholas got us off to a very good start, narrowly losing an extremely tight match 3-2, but getting us half the games we needed. Rhys and Ben found the going tough, and Nikhil narrowly failed to win a game, although his match was extremely close. With everyone supporting Nicholas, Marcus lived up to his team captain's role and calmly but efficiently beat England's number 8 winning 3-0 - gaining his 2nd win of the day against someone he has never beaten before and ensuring the boys of 2nd place.
Overall, we had a fantastic day. All the boys tried extremely hard, and deserved their silver medals. Well done boys!
