Hertfordshire, February 2013
Having done brilliantly in the Intercounties Stage I, the GU13 team found themselves still in the main Intercounties draw, against some very tough teams.
Eve C, Sian M and Jasmine T went to Watford to represent Oxon U13s against Hampshire, South East Wales and Hertfordshire on 3rd February. 8-year old Jasmine started well against Hampshire's Megan Thomas, but found the 4-year age gap too much to overcome as the latter won 3-0. Top string Eve despatched number 2 in the region Annabel Vaughan very comfortably, before Sian resumed rivalries with Hampshire's number 2 Brooke Williams. Sian played brilliantly to win the first game, before Brooke hit back to take the second. The third swung both ways before Brooke just pipped Sian and then she retained the momentum to take the fourth game and the tie.
Jasmine had her best match against Welsh number 3 Eleri Rowlands, hitting a lot of winners, but eventually losing 3-0. Sian battled well against Katie Jones but unfortunately lost 3 very tight games. Eve provided the comeback of the day however, storming back from 2-0 down to beat Welsh number 1 Ciara Richards 3-2 in brililant style. After lunch and some friendly three-quarters with the Hampshire contingent, we resumed against eventual winners Hertfordshire. Jasmine found Sarah Schofield's precision serving and powerful driving too hot to handle. Eve played brilliantly in taking the second game of her match from the strong Amber Marshall, but eventually succumbed 3-1. Sian again got less reward than her efforts deserved, looking a likely winner of the first and particularly third games against Nyah Williams, before yielding to her opponent.
So well done to all three girls for some battling performances in the face of some very tough opposition, and thanks to Katie Quarterman for her coaching and encouragement throughout.
