Ladies Stage One Weekend

9th & 10th November 2013 at Middlesex

Middlesex played host to Cambridgeshire, Oxfordshire and Suffolk for Stage One of the ladies inter-county this weekend. Oxfordshire narrowly missed out on promotion last season, missing out by 1 point but this was a blessing in disguise as Oxfordshire's top 2 players, Katie Quarterman and Kerri Lancaster were unavailable this weekend.

The Oxfordshire's Squad was made up of Rachel Donald, Julie Peachey, Kelly Scott, Aisling Guerzoni, Sarah Nesbitt and Eve Coxon - making her senior county debut.

In the first match Oxfordshire played a strong Middlesex side who had former world number 16 Dominique Lloyd Walter at 1 who Rachel Donald had the pleasure of playing. The only win of the fixture was Aisling Guerzoni at 4 with a comfortable 3-1 win against Eva Feredoes.

The second match was a closely contested affair against Cambridgeshire who had also lost their first match against Suffolk. The team started well with Aisling and Rachel winning 3-0, Eve Coxon picked up a point in her close match but lost 3-1 and the match was in the balance. Both Kelly Scott and Julie Peachey were leading 2-0 in their games but both lost their matches 3-2 meaning the tie was a 3-2 loss.

The final match on Sunday morning was crucial in determining whether Oxfordshire would have to fight for promotion or relegation over the Stage Two weekend which will be held in March. With a slightly depleted side, Kelly Scott and Aisling Guerzoni moved up the order for Sarah Nesbitt to come in at 4. The match started with the two youngsters on court, Aisling and Eve, Aisling was 2-0 when her opponent retired with injury and Eve Coxon played brilliantly and battled to a 3-2 win. A slightly jaded Rachel Donald pulled off a remarkable 3-2 win at 1 and Sarah Nesbitt had a comfortable 3-0 win, Kelly Scott also had a 3-1 win to complete a much needed 5-0 win against Suffolk and the maximum 20 points which ensures Oxfordshire's position in league 1 for next season but also the opportunity for promotion in March.
